Bokashi is a catalyst compound that can quickly transform organic matter into a high-quality fertilizer. At first glance, the substance resembles ordinary bran. However, in reality, it is a unique product that is fermented and enriched with valuable microorganisms. Using this substance helps achieve a number of positive effects.
What is Bokashi?
"Bokashi" refers to a common microbiological fertilizer that helps quickly restore soil fertility. This biologically active substance promotes soil formation, accelerating the process.
Bokashi is similar to bran that has been fermented by microorganisms. This process imbues it with beneficial substances that promote the effective growth and development of garden plants. This biologically active ingredient promotes rapid rooting, encourages root growth, and creates a robust vegetative mass.
Furthermore, the substance increases the number of ovaries in crops and enriches the soil with beneficial elements. It strengthens the plant's immune system, suppresses parasitic activity, and combats pathogens that cause many diseases. It improves the absorption of various compounds by fruit crops, including active phosphorus, potassium, and nitrogen.
Benefits of its use
This biologically active product is successfully used in rural areas and even in livestock farming. When sprinkled in an outdoor toilet, it can eliminate bad odors in just 12 hours. Bokashi can also eliminate unpleasant odors in chicken coops. It is also often added to livestock feed. It helps improve digestive function, coat condition, and the quality of milk and meat.
The main properties of Bokashi include the following:
- Quickly converts food waste, fallen leaves and hay into effective organic fertilizers.
- Revitalizes the soil prepared for seedlings.
- Ensures rapid composting and rotting of fresh manure.
- Restores lawn grass damaged by sun rays.
- Helps to effectively use the macronutrients contained in the soil.
- Blocks the development of pathogenic microorganisms in the soil.
- Increases the percentage of humus in the soil.
To restore and improve soil health, Bokashi is recommended to be combined with green manure planting. This significantly increases the product's effectiveness.

Pros and cons
The main advantages of the substance include the following:
- The possibility of recycling food waste. This method is considered convenient and environmentally friendly. Moreover, Bokashi can even be used for meat and fish, which are not added to regular compost.
- Fast compost production. This substance helps produce nutrient-rich material twice as fast.
- Eliminating the need to collect and dispose of waste in landfills minimizes the risk of environmental pollution.
- There is no need for regular use of raw materials – in particular, worms, which are grown on special farms.
However, the drug also has a number of disadvantages. The main ones include the following:
- Saturation with valuable elements only after digging into the soil.
- The need for a second bucket at the stage of waste production in the first.
Making Bokashi from bran at home
There are various ways to make Bokashi. Everyone can choose the method they prefer. To obtain the substance from bran, follow these steps:
- Take ¾ of the bran and spread it evenly on the film. This can be done in any warm room. It's important to maintain the humidity at approximately 30%. If the bran is too dry, it's recommended to moisten it with EM.
- Add undiluted EM preparation to the hand sprayer.
- Spray the raw material evenly and stir it at the same time. Keep moistening the mixture until it forms a ball.
- Place the processed bran in a strong black bag, squeeze out the air and tie tightly with a rubber band.
- Leave the mixture to mature. It should be kept at a temperature of 32-35 degrees Celsius.
- Check the bag after a week. The aroma of bread kvass indicates the substance is ready. The fertilizer can be used as is or dried for storage.

How to use correctly
To ensure Bokashi is effective, it's important to strictly follow the instructions. The product can be used at various stages of crop development.
During sowing
Any seeds, tubers, or bulbs should be planted mixed with a biologically active product. One pinch of the product is required. Subsequently, it is recommended to feed garden crops during the active growing season.
When planting vegetables and fruit plants
The product can be used for various crops. It should be applied directly to planting holes. Typically, one spoonful is used for this purpose. Seedlings can also be soaked in the EM product. This method helps increase the content of beneficial microorganisms in the soil structure and improve crop development.
By root application method
Bokashi can be sprinkled directly onto the soil surface. Leave a 30-centimeter gap between the soil and the plants. It is then recommended to cover the beds with mulch. Alternate the use of this substance with EM products to achieve maximum results.
Improving the soil mixture for seedlings
To feed the seedlings, it's recommended to use a cup of natural fertilizer. Mix this mixture with a bucket of soil. Then cover with plastic wrap and place in a warm place. Let the mixture ripen there, which will take about three weeks.
How to prepare an infusion
To make a valuable infusion, fill a bucket with herbs, add 2 cups of Bokashi tea, and 1 cup of sugar. Then, it's recommended to add water, cover, and store in a warm place. Stir the mixture daily.

After 7 days, strain the infusion. It can be used as fertilizer, mixed with water. To do this, use 1 cup of the infusion per bucket of liquid.
Safety precautions
If you haven't used all of the product, it's recommended to release the air from the bag, seal it tightly, and store it in a cool, dark place. Protect Bokashi from frost and sunlight. Store the product at temperatures between 5 and 25 degrees Celsius. This will help preserve the product's properties for up to one year.
Its natural composition poses no health risk to humans or pets. Therefore, no special protective measures are required when using the product.
Bokashi is an effective product that helps enrich the soil with nutrients. To ensure the desired results, it's important to follow the instructions for use. It's also crucial to adhere to the dosage and recommended application guidelines.
