Description of the Big Mommy tomato variety, growing and care recommendations

The Big Mommy tomato has only recently become popular. In 2015, the variety was registered in the State Register. Vegetable growers who planted and grew it have come to love the fruits of this new tomato and were delighted with the harvest.

Description of the variety

What's so special about this variety and what are its characteristics? Let's take a closer look:

  1. The plant is short, of limited growth, and determinate. It grows no more than 1 meter tall.
  2. The stem is thick and stable. It is formed from 2–3 shoots.
  3. The leaves are wrinkled, reminiscent of potato leaves. There are few of them.
  4. The variety is considered early, as the fruits appear 90–95 days after planting.
  5. Big Mama tomatoes are plump, bright red, and heart-shaped. The flesh is sweet and rich. They contain many essential nutrients, including lycopene. This high lycopene content is a beneficial and compelling advantage for fresh consumption.
  6. The root system is strong. The roots grow horizontally.

Characteristics of a tomato

Growing

This variety was developed for growing tomatoes under plastic covers. However, in southern regions of Russia, it grows well in open ground. In areas with cooler climates, Big Mama tomatoes are grown in greenhouses.

Please note: This variety is a hybrid, so you'll need to purchase seeds annually for planting and growing.

Sow seeds for seedlings in the last week of March or the first days of April. Prick out the seeds when the first true leaf appears. Plant under plastic in early or mid-May. Plant the bushes in a 40x50 cm pattern. Before planting the seedlings in the greenhouse, it's a good idea to prepare nutritious soil. Disinfect it with Fitolavin. Prepare a solution of 2 ml of the product per 1 liter of water. The soil should be well-warmed. Dig it in with humus.

Tomato seedlings

A few days after planting, the plants need to be tied up.

If the seedlings are to be planted outdoors, the young shoots are hardened off for two weeks before planting. To do this, the seedlings are placed outdoors in a shaded area.

Care Features

For full growth and further fruiting of tomatoes, careful care is required.

Before the bushes begin to bloom, they are fed with nitrogen no more than twice, with a 10-day interval.

During flowering, plants require potassium and phosphorus. Fertilizing with cow manure or ash is possible. Use 0.5 liters of liquid cow manure, steeped for a week, per 10 liters of water.

Tomato bush

Ash is used in the following way.

  1. Add 1 cup of ash to 1 liter of hot water. Let it steep for 2 days.
  2. Strain. Dilute in water.
  3. Spray the tomatoes with this product.

Then tomatoes need:

  • regular watering;
  • mandatory loosening of the soil;
  • thorough weeding.

Tomatoes are a heat-loving crop. Water them at the roots, not the leaves. Avoid overwatering, as excess liquid will harm the plant. Don't allow the soil to dry out. Therefore, water sparingly.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Breeders, working on developing new varieties, strive to imbue them with exceptional qualities. Big Mama tomatoes are no exception.

Harvesting and storage

By following the harvesting guidelines, you can keep tomatoes fresh for 3–5 months. The best storage locations are a cellar, basement, or refrigerator. The temperature in the storage area should not exceed 12°C. Humidity should be 80–85%. Storage areas should be dark and cool.

Unripe fruits keep better and longer, so tomatoes are stored green.

  1. If you decide to harvest your tomatoes and save them, start by spraying them with Fitosporin. The instructions for the product state that the final treatment should be carried out 20 days before harvest if the tomatoes are grown outdoors; 4 days before harvest if they are grown in a greenhouse.
  2. Choose the right time to harvest. You need to pick tomatoes before the nighttime temperature drops below 8°C. If tomatoes have been exposed to frost on the vine, they won't keep for long, even if there are no external signs of damage.
  3. Pick tomatoes during the day when the dew on the fruit has dried.
  4. Sort the fruits carefully. Store only undamaged specimens.
  5. Wipe each tomato with a cotton swab soaked in rubbing alcohol. You can wrap each one individually in paper.
  6. Place in wooden boxes or plastic containers in no more than three layers. Sprinkle each layer with dry sawdust. Store in a cool, dark place.

Please note: Tomatoes grown in open ground have a longer shelf life and are better preserved.

Gardeners' reviews

Gardener reviews indicate that everyone who has planted the Big Mama tomato loves it. Of the 20 reviews I read, only one female gardener reported disliking the taste. Otherwise, the manufacturer's stated characteristics and description of the variety are accurate, but the taste is off.

Based on the responses of vegetable growers, the following picture emerged.

  1. Tomatoes are loved for their large, beautiful, juicy fruits.
  2. The tomatoes don't split, and the skin remains tight. Cracking is common among many varieties, but the Big Mama doesn't suffer from this problem.
  3. The variety boasts remarkable taste qualities. The fruits are fleshy and sweet, weighing up to 300 grams.
  4. Vegetable growers claim that tomatoes are disease-resistant. The variety is resistant to temperature fluctuations and is immune to disease.
  5. Tomatoes ripen very quickly. Among other varieties, Big Mama tomatoes are among the first to turn red in the garden.
  6. With proper care, this variety produces a good harvest. You can harvest up to 10 kg of tomatoes per square meter.

The Big Mommy tomato guarantees a rich harvest of selected fruits.
