Before spring planting, gardeners should familiarize themselves with all the tomato varieties suitable for polycarbonate greenhouses and select the best ones. Greenhouse conditions can extend the growing season and yield a larger harvest. Each crop has its own growing nuances and unique characteristics. By familiarizing yourself with the full range of tomatoes, you can choose the varieties best suited for your region.
Features of greenhouse conditions
Most tomatoes don't fully ripen in the temperate climate. That's why tomato seeds are sown in seedling boxes in advance, and after 40-60 days, the grown seedlings are transferred to the garden bed. However, even this method doesn't guarantee that all tomatoes will ripen before frost.
To extend the growing season of vegetables and protect them from the vagaries of weather, diseases, pests, and birds, a polycarbonate greenhouse is used. Growing tomatoes in greenhouses increases yield and improves the quality of the vegetables. Tomatoes grown in sheltered areas typically produce beautiful, undamaged fruits. Crops grown in greenhouses are much easier to care for.
What tomatoes can be grown in greenhouses?
Various crop varieties are suitable for greenhouses. Most growers provide instructions on the paper bags regarding the proper growing conditions for tomatoes. The choice of seed depends on yield, individual resistance to fungal diseases, and suitability for the climate and cultivation method.
Regarding yield, it's important to remember that 1 square meter of soil typically yields 12-16 kilograms of tomatoes. F1 hybrids are easy to care for and resistant to fungal diseases, so their yield is high (around 20 kilograms).
In a greenhouse, it's naturally better to plant indeterminate, or tall, varieties. They grow tall rather than outward, reaching several meters in height without taking up too much space. The vine-like bushes of these tomatoes bear fruit for a long time, until late autumn, and yield a larger harvest than other varieties. The bush is trained beforehand. All side shoots are removed from the stem, leaving only small stumps. Instead of "feeding" unwanted shoots, the tomatoes grow upward.
In addition to tall-stemmed plants, it's advisable to purchase seeds of low-growing varieties (Chaika, Dama, and Ballerina) for greenhouse cultivation. It's also recommended to select tomatoes with shorter stems, which begin bearing fruit much earlier than taller varieties. This way, you can harvest several times a season.

Large-fruited tomatoes (Cardinal, Bull's Heart, World Record Holder) are planted in greenhouses. These tomatoes are suitable for light salads or sauces. Medium-sized tomatoes (Slivovka, Italia, Vishenka) are planted for canning. Cherry tomatoes (Bonsai, Red Cherry, Minibell) are in high demand among gardeners. Their elegant, small, uniformly shaped fruits are versatile and ideal for canning, salads, cooking, and garnishing.
Early-ripening varieties are grown in greenhouses. By planting early varieties, you can harvest several times per season. Early-ripening varieties are typically hybrids (Druzhok F1, Uragan F1). Hybrids are known to be resistant to fungal diseases (Roma F1, Intuition F1). Hybrid varieties that remain fresh for a long time and produce attractive fruit (Ivanovets F1, Akutai F1, Krasnobay F1) are suitable for commercial cultivation.
Gardeners value not only the taste of vegetables but also their appearance. Recommended varieties include the Lorraine Beauty, whose fruit resembles tangerine segments, and ribbed tomatoes (Striped Etoile). Indoors, you can plant multicolored vegetables, such as white tomatoes (Snow White), green tomatoes (Malachite Box), dark tomatoes (Black Prince), and striped tomatoes (Tiger).
Gardeners who decide to grow vegetables in polycarbonate greenhouses should follow these recommendations:
- do not buy seeds at markets or from random people;
- buy seed material from reputable manufacturers:
- pay attention to the expiration date;
- Buy several types of seeds to be on the safe side if one type doesn't grow.
Stores sell tomatoes that are recommended for indoor planting only. Information about the variety and recommended planting method is provided on the paper bag.
New varieties of tomatoes for greenhouses

Comrade author, look up plant growing terms in agronomy textbooks and don't make up your own. There are no tomatoes in the world that ripen in 70 days—that's from the moment the seedlings are planted. Read the variety descriptions more carefully and don't mislead gardeners.
