Description of the drug Killer against the Colorado potato beetle and instructions for use

Gardeners widely use Killer against Colorado potato beetles. This chemical-based product effectively kills insects. Its components have a paralyzing effect on the pests. If you take precautions, you can get rid of them for good. To use the product correctly, you should read the instructions and understand its mechanism of action.

Description, composition and release form of the product

Killer has a comprehensive effect and is capable of killing a variety of pests. It is suitable for treating crops against Colorado potato beetles, spider mites, aphids, and whiteflies. Killer is available as a concentrate for dilution in water. The chemical is available in 1.3 ml glass ampoules or 10 ml bottles. It is intended for use on potatoes, vegetables, and fruit and berry plants. It is used in open ground, greenhouses, and other enclosed structures. Killer has contact, fumigation, and nerve-paralytic effects.

The composition contains 2 active elements:

  • Cypermethrin – 50 g/l;
  • Chlorpyrifos – 500 g/l.

In combination, both components have a powerful, destructive effect on pests.

How does the drug work?

The killer destroys the insect's nervous system through the gastrointestinal tract, resulting in its death. Colorado potato beetles consume the sprayed shoots and leaves and then digest the lethal compound. Maximum concentration is reached within 24 hours after the plot is treated. The results last up to 4 weeks. The product does not lose its properties when exposed to sunlight, water, or heat. The chemical composition has a detrimental effect not only on adult beetles but also on their larvae. On average, Colorado potato beetles are completely destroyed within two days.

Preparation of the solution

To prepare the solution, use one ampoule per 10 liters of water. The application rate depends on the treatment method. When spraying seedlings, use 10 ml per 0.5 liters. This mixture is sufficient for 25 kg of tubers.

If we are talking about treating an area, you will need 1 ampoule per 10 liters of water.

How to use Killer?

The product must be applied according to the instructions. It is used for spraying tubers and plants. What to look for:

  • the treatment should be carried out once, without combining it with other insecticides; it is especially forbidden to add substances with a high copper and alkali content;
  • First, put on clothing that covers your limbs, a respirator mask, and gloves;
  • Spray the tubers or plants until a wet coating appears on them, without forming drops.

Toxicity and precautions

The chemical Killer is a Class 3 toxic substance. The following precautions should be observed when handling it.

  1. Carefully follow the instructions, taking into account the dosage, side effects, and storage instructions. Recommendations for combining the product with other insecticides are also important.
  2. Observe the prescribed dosage. If the dose is too low, the chemical will not have the desired effect. Exceeding the prescribed dosage can cause harm to humans, animals, and plants.
  3. Do not use products that have been improperly stored. Also, avoid chemicals whose expiration dates have passed.
  4. Prepare the solution immediately before use. Storing the prepared insecticide is hazardous to the environment and reduces its effectiveness.
  5. Be sure to wear protective equipment for your respiratory system, skin, and eyes. Masks, gloves, and protective suits are recommended for this purpose.
  6. If the concentrate comes into contact with skin, rinse the affected area with clean water. If the eyes or gastrointestinal tract are affected, seek medical attention immediately.
  7. During work, it is prohibited to smoke, eat or drink.
  8. When treating plants, there should be no children or animals in the garden.
  9. After finishing work with the chemical, the suit and other protective equipment are thoroughly washed.

Analogues of the product

There are many "substitutes" for the insecticide Killer. These analogs have the same effect, but have different compositions and differ in price. They are used in the same way as Killer.

  1. Destroy. This is one of the best products for killing Colorado potato beetles. This insecticide is available as a suspension. It works by disrupting the pest's nervous system. It remains effective for 20 days after application. The product is resistant to various temperatures and kills the insects immediately after application to the affected plant.
  2. Prestige. This insecticide is used as a preventative measure against tubers before planting, but it is also used to control harmful beetles. The poison is effective for 50 days after application. After this period, the compound breaks down into non-toxic components.
  3. Commander. This product is used against Colorado potato beetle infestations; it's low-toxic. One application per potato is usually sufficient, as the insecticide is resistant to weather changes and precipitation, and is not washed off by water.
  4. Aktara is a powerful chemical designed to eliminate Colorado potato beetles and other pests. Its action is based on the Killer principle, and it is fast and powerful. The first effect can be seen within 2-3 hours after application to the vegetable crop.
  5. Iskra. A moderately toxic product, effective for 14 days from application. Its mechanism of action is similar to other insecticides. It comes in tablet form, which is added to water and applied to the target plant.
