Characteristics of the Atlantis tomato and cultivation features of the variety

The Atlantis tomato, which has received reviews from experienced gardeners and collectors, was bred in Siberia and is highly resistant to adverse growing conditions. It can be planted in both a greenhouse and an open garden bed. Either way, you'll never be left without a tomato harvest.

Description of the variety

The Atlantis tomato variety is an indeterminate plant. It continues to grow as long as temperatures permit. In a greenhouse, Atlantis bushes reach 2 meters or more. In the open field, growth stops due to cold weather in late August, but by then the bush has reached 1.5–1.7 meters.

This variety produces a high yield of 7-9 kg of tomatoes per plant. It is recommended to grow 1-2 stems, tying them to a support structure. To prevent the plant from becoming overly dense, remove side shoots (suckers) and trim some foliage below each cluster that is beginning to form ovaries.

Plants in groups look very impressive. The bush is completely covered with fruit clusters, each containing 4-6 tomatoes. The tomatoes in each cluster of the Atlantis variety are almost identical in size. Their perfectly round shape meets modern European standards.

At biological maturity, tomatoes turn bright red. The Atlantis variety is characterized by uniform ripening of the fruits on each cluster. This makes harvesting convenient, allowing the gardener to pick all the tomatoes from a cluster at once. This allows the plant to direct all nutrients to the next ovaries.

Description of fruits:

  • The average weight of tomatoes is 400 g. Significant deviations occur rarely.
  • According to gardeners, the Atlantis tomato can produce larger ovaries—up to 600 g. However, these tomatoes only grow on the lower clusters.
  • The skin of the Atlantis tomato variety is strong and thick.
  • The fruits are not prone to cracking, are stored well and tolerate transportation even when ripe.
  • The pulp is fleshy, the seed chambers are small.
  • The consistency of the pulp is tender and dense, the color is bright, without pronounced white zones in the center and near the stalk.

The tomatoes have a distinctive flavor, with a sweet and sour balance and a distinct aroma typical of tomatoes. These versatile fruits are suitable for fresh consumption (in salads, sandwiches, and hot dishes) and for winter preservation. Small tomatoes from the latest harvest can be used for whole-fruit canning. However, Atlantis tomatoes are most often used for puree and juice, which contain a high amount of dry matter and have an excellent flavor.

How to grow seedlings?

Sow 50-60 days before planting. Place the seed tray in a warm location (25°C); seedlings will emerge in 5-7 days. Grow the seedlings until they have 2-3 true leaves and then transplant them into 7x7 cm (3x3 in) spacings.

Seedling care involves watering regularly. Use moderately warm water; to prevent fungal diseases, you can add potassium permanganate (a light pink solution). The recommended air temperature is not lower than +18 °C.

Transplant to a permanent location in May (in a greenhouse) or early June (into open beds). No more than 3-4 plants can be planted per square meter. It's best to plant the plants in single-row strips: space the plants about 70 cm apart in a row, with a 1-meter gap between strips.

To ensure better ripening and ventilation of the plantings, it's advisable to trim the lower leaves from the bushes. This also helps prevent Alternaria and late blight in rainy years.

Reviews from gardeners

Valentina Sergeevna, Novosibirsk:

"I'm quite pleased with the Atlantis variety: the package description matches the results perfectly. The tomatoes turned out beautiful, round, and smooth. They're quite large and not suitable for pickling. However, the tomato juice was sweet and thick, as they don't have much liquid. I also tried making lecho. It's a very tasty and aromatic variety."

Mikhail Semenovich, Novokuznetsk district:

"Tomatoes grow well in the southern Kuzbass region, but the Atlantis variety won me over the first time I tried it. The beautiful tomato clusters turned out to be quite heavy: each weighs about 1.2 kg. A bush can grow 6-7 such clusters, so tomato preserves are doing just fine these days."

Polina Petrovna, Zlatoust:

"The side shoots grow very vigorously. But that's Atlantis's only drawback. Otherwise, the variety impresses with its yield, which doesn't decline in cold years, and its tasty, large, and fleshy fruits. They're delicious in salads, and we make juice and sauces from these tomatoes."

Nikita, Taganrog:

"We tried planting a new variety, Atlantis. I'm not particularly fond of tomatoes, but this one hit the spot: it keeps for a long time after picking. The tomatoes ripened in the pantry right up until New Year's, when any fresh vegetable seems delicious. The variety's labeling matches exactly what we got."
