The Burzhuy F1 tomato is a new variety of tomato, developed in the early 21st century in Ukraine.
This is a mid-season variety – the first fruit appears just 1.5 months after planting, and the plant rarely grows taller than 1.2 m.
Characteristics of tomatoes
So, the Burzhuy tomato variety description and characteristics are as follows:
- Plants tolerate weather changes well, and they feel great even in very hot temperatures;
- the fruits are round and large, red in color, the average weight is about 200 g, but there are specimens that reach a weight of 0.5 kg;
- The Burzhuy tomato is very juicy, since each tomato contains only 6% dry matter, and the pulp is quite fleshy;
- The yield of this variety is about 3 kg per bush (for tomatoes of this weight, this is not a very high result).

Tomatoes are well suited for fresh consumption, as well as for canning, pickling (both in jars and barrels), making pastes, tomato puree, ketchups, sauces and juices.
The fruits are stored well for a long time, so they are suitable even for long-distance transportation.
Burzhuy seeds undergo thorough treatment at the factory to combat various diseases common to tomatoes, protecting tomatoes of this variety from most illnesses. However, tomatoes can be susceptible to various pests, the most common of which are slugs, Colorado potato beetles, and spider mites. A wide range of pest control products are available at specialty stores.

The most preferred products are Prestige (for beetles), Bordeaux mixture, and a mild soap solution (for mites and slugs). All of these products, as evidenced by reviews from gardeners and photos posted on social media, do not cause any harm to the plants themselves.
According to gardeners (especially those just beginning to grow this vegetable crop), the main drawback of the Burzhuy tomato is the brittleness of its branches, which is usually caused by improper staking. Therefore, when large fruits form on the branches, additional support should be provided.
How are Burzhuy tomatoes grown?
One of the most important aspects of growing any tomato is determining the sowing date. Many gardeners consult the lunar calendar when determining the time to sow tomatoes, which lists the following dates as the optimal planting dates for 2025:
- in February: 9th, 10th, 18th-20th;
- in March: 5, 6, 19-23, 25-27;
- in April: 6-9, 20-23.

But don't rely solely on the advice of this source. It's also important to consider when to transplant tomato seedlings into the greenhouse. In central and mid-latitude Russia, frosts sometimes occur in May, which can ruin the upcoming harvest, so tomatoes are planted in early June.
Since the Burzhuy tomato is a low-growing variety, the seedlings should be approximately 55-60 days old when transplanted into the greenhouse. Accordingly, the best time to sow this tomato variety is either March 25-27 or April 6-9.
The seeds can be sown in common boxes, but when 2-3 leaves appear, the seedlings will need to be transplanted into separate containers.

Choosing a location for the seedlings is equally important. Avoid planting tomatoes after peas, potatoes, eggplants, peppers, onions, or carrots (they're also undesirable next to them during the current season). It's best to plant cabbage, cucumbers, pumpkins, and zucchini in the garden before the tomatoes appear. If crop rotation isn't possible, especially in greenhouses, mustard should be sown after the harvest.
A week before transplanting the seedlings into the greenhouse, it is necessary to begin gradually hardening them off, thus preparing them for new growing conditions.

No more than 4 tomato bushes of a given variety should be placed per 1 m² in a greenhouse.
Burzhuy tomatoes should be watered in the evenings and only with warm water. To ensure a good yield, tomatoes require frequent loosening of the soil and don't forget to apply at least four types of complex fertilizer throughout the season.
