Description of the hybrid tomato Kornabel and cultivation of the variety using seedlings

Not long ago, French breeders developed a tomato variety similar in appearance to a bell pepper. Gardeners immediately became interested in the Cornabelle tomato, its characteristics, and description, so they could try it in their own gardens.

An unusual vegetable

This tomato's distinctive feature is its pepper-like shape. At first glance, it's difficult to tell whether it's a tomato or a red bell pepper. The Kornabel f1 tomato arrived in Russia recently and hasn't yet gained widespread popularity.

The main reason is the variety's hybrid nature, making it impossible to grow tomatoes from seeds harvested last year. New seed must be purchased each year, which is quite costly, as imported seeds are more expensive than those produced in Russia.

Not all gardeners are willing to pay for seeds annually, but those who appreciate unusual tomato varieties recommend Kornabel.

This vegetable is not suitable for growing in cold regions. In temperate climates, it's best to plant this variety in a greenhouse; in open ground, it will thrive in southern latitudes. Kornabel tomatoes are mid-season: from sowing to ripening, the fruit takes 120 days. The plant is not limited in growth, so it requires constant care, including shaping and tying to a support structure.

The yield of a variety depends on several factors:

  1. Planting method. The best choice is horizontal planting, which allows for the formation and development of additional shoots.
  2. Forming a bush. Avoid planting multiple plants in the same hole.
  3. Distance between bushes. If the planting is dense, there will be more yield per square meter.
  4. Feeding with biostimulants. When choosing a feed, the primary criterion should be the substance's safety for humans.

If you take proper care of your plants and use a few tricks, you can reap a good harvest even in unfavorable weather conditions.

The fruits ripen in July-August, depending on the region. A single cluster produces 4 to 7 tomatoes. The average fruit weight is 0.2 kg; the maximum is 0.5 kg. All tomatoes on a single bush are of the same size. The tomatoes are sweet, fleshy, and very dense. Thanks to the density of the fruits, the harvest stores well and is easily transported over long distances.

One of the main advantages of this hybrid variety is its resistance to pests and diseases. For example, Kornabel is resistant to fusarium, verticillium wilt, and tomato mosaic.

Sowing and planting seedlings

To prevent tomato plants from overgrowing, seedlings should be sown no earlier than 60 days before planting, typically in March. Planting should be done before flowers appear, otherwise the plants may not establish or develop well.

Seedlings in glasses

This variety is easy on the soil—no special soil preparation is required. However, it is recommended to fertilize the soil before sowing. Fertilizers containing phosphorus, potassium, and nitrogen are recommended. Organic matter, such as humus or peat, are also suitable, but should be used as a supplement. Sow in trays, but after the leaves appear, the seedlings are pricked out and transplanted into individual containers.

Tomatoes can be planted in their permanent location when the soil warms to 15°C; plant holes 10 cm deep. Bushes are formed from a single stem. The distance between bushes and rows can vary. Planting the seedlings close together will require additional pinching, which increases the risk of disease. However, this method yields a higher yield. Leaving sufficient space between the bushes will not require any additional intervention, making care easier.

Watering should be frequent but not excessive. Fertilize as needed. Use nitrogen to improve bush growth, phosphorus to strengthen roots, and potassium to promote fruit growth. It's important not to overdo it with fertilizers, especially those containing potassium.

An excess of this substance can seriously harm the plant: it will interfere with the absorption of calcium and can have a detrimental effect on the development of the bushes. Furthermore, since the mineral influences fruit growth, excess potassium leads to excessive weight gain in tomatoes. As a result, the plant may not be able to withstand the weight and break.

After the first tomatoes ripen, harvesting continues until the end of the season. The Kornabel continues to grow, meaning it will continue to produce fruit for a very long time. These tomatoes are used for salads, canning, and drying.

Growing hybrid varieties is not easy. However, this tomato receives only positive reviews from gardeners and is becoming increasingly popular each year.
