Characteristics and features of growing the Moneymaker tomato variety

The Moneymaker tomato is a Dutch selection. This variety is characterized by abundant fruiting, disease resistance, and undemanding cultivation conditions in open ground and greenhouses.

Advantages of the variety

Nightshade crops are popular among gardeners. It's rare to find a vegetable grower who doesn't grow tomatoes.

Tomato seedlings

Among the variety of tomatoes, the Moneymaker tomato is considered one of the best for greenhouse and open-field planting. The early-ripening Moneymaker variety is a Dutch selection and is resistant to diseases common to nightshade crops.

The first ripe tomatoes can be picked from the vines 90-100 days after germination. The tomato skin is thick and smooth, and the fruit is scarlet. Ripe fruits are eaten fresh and are suitable for canning.

Tomatoes of this variety are known for their abundant fruiting before the onset of cold weather. Even green tomatoes retain their flavor and can be preserved unripe. A key characteristic of these tomatoes is the simultaneous ripening of the fruits (weighing up to 100 g) in clusters. A single plant can yield up to 10 kg of fruit.

Agrotechnical conditions for cultivation

The description of plant care techniques includes stages of work on caring for planting material until the end of the growing season.

Tomato seeds

Growing seedlings indoors allows you to produce high-quality saplings. Planting seeds in seedling containers begins in the second half of March. The seeds, pre-treated with potassium permanganate, are dried until they become free-flowing.

The seeds are planted in a prepared soil mixture consisting of wood ash, sawdust, and peat, using a ribbon technique, spaced 0.5 mm apart. After watering, the container is covered with plastic wrap to create a greenhouse-like environment. Periodically, the container is ventilated by opening the top and watered using a drip system.

After the sprouts emerge, the film is removed, and once the leaves have fully formed, the seedlings are pricked out. When transplanting the crop into the ground, it's important to consider the variety's tendency to spread outward.

To increase crop yield, planting material is placed in holes 50 cm apart, maintaining a distance of 70-80 cm between rows. Up to 3 bushes are placed per 1 square meter.

Caring for seedlings

For replanting, the soil is prepared in the fall. This is done by digging it and adding organic and complex mineral fertilizers. In the spring, the soil is dug again and holes are formed.

When replanting, water the plant generously to preserve its root system as much as possible. The elongated seedlings are placed at an angle, allowing the plant to gain strength through the formation of additional roots.

When growing crops, it is recommended to ensure a balanced application of mineral and organic fertilizers. Excess or deficiency of either will reduce crop yield.

When transplanting bushes into open ground, it's important to consider weather conditions. If there's no rain, provide supplemental irrigation. If the plant is weak and doesn't develop well in greenhouse conditions, fertilizing is necessary.

During the growing season, the crop requires a combination of mineral and organic fertilizers for vigorous growth. Therefore, ammophos, diammonium phosphate, chicken manure, or poultry manure are added to the soil.

Growing tomatoes

During the flowering period, baker's yeast is used as a fertilizer. A solution of 100 g of yeast and 1 liter of water is applied to the roots of the plant.

Recommendations from gardeners

Gardener reviews highlight the variety's key advantages. They note the following positive qualities:

  • high productivity;
  • friendly ripening of fruits;
  • possibility of cultivation in open and closed ground conditions;
  • wide range of culinary applications;
  • abundant fruiting;
  • dense skin, which allows to preserve the taste and increase the shelf life;
  • high seed germination;
  • universal growing conditions (greenhouse, open ground).

Among the disadvantages of the variety are noted:

  • deformation of bushes under the weight of tomato bunches;
  • reduction in fruit size at the end of the growing season;
  • The variety requires a high humus content in the soil.

Viktor Pavlov, 49 years old, Omsk:

"I've been growing the Moneymaker tomato variety for several years, and I can confidently say that the yield and health of the plant depend on care. The crop is prone to late blight, but timely treatment with a mixture of slaked lime and copper sulfate prevents the disease. Therefore, when caring for it, I recommend treating the seeds with an aqueous solution of potassium permanganate before planting and periodically applying fungal protection products."

    This variety has many more advantages than disadvantages. I haven't had any problems growing it; this tomato doesn't require a lot of watering; I used a growth activator. BioGrow.
