If you're looking for a suitable variety with unusual fruits, many of which will grow on each plant, consider the Supermodel tomato. This variety got its name for a reason. It's due to the shape of the fruits, which are long and thin. A key feature of this variety is its flavor. Despite their unusual shape, tomatoes are excellent not only for fresh consumption, but also for canning, including whole ones.

This variety was added to the Russian state register 10 years ago. Since then, Supermodel tomatoes have become very popular and are used by many gardeners. Besides the unusual fruit shape, this variety boasts a host of other positive qualities.

Description of the variety

These tomatoes can be harvested quite early. The variety is considered mid-early, and the fruits ripen within 100 days of sowing the seeds for seedlings. However, in unfavorable summers, the harvest can take up to two weeks longer.

The variety's characteristics and description indicate that Supermodel is an easy-to-grow tomato. These determinate bushes stop growing after reaching a height of 60 cm. If planted permanently in a greenhouse or other plastic shelter, the plant can reach up to 80 cm. However, even this height is considered small, and the bushes hold up well, so tying them to a support structure is not necessary.

The plant grows short but quite lush. Excess foliage can interfere with normal fruit formation, so it's best to remove excess leaves and side shoots. However, it's important not to completely strip the plant of its foliage. Otherwise, the bush will focus all its energy on regenerating foliage, which can significantly reduce yield.

Properly trained bushes allow them to be grown close together. Up to six plants can be planted per square meter. Considering that each bush can yield up to 3 kg of fruit, the total yield per square meter of fertilized soil will be approximately 18 kg.

You can increase the quantity and quality of fruit with organic and mineral fertilizers. As for additional care during cultivation, such as spraying, this step is a good idea. This will protect the bushes from various diseases and pests that negatively impact yield and ripening time.

The bushes grow well with adequate attention from the gardener. The plant needs watering as needed. The Supermodel variety doesn't tolerate drought very well, but excessive watering can also be detrimental to the plant. Therefore, certain guidelines must be followed.

If there's a lot of rain, drain the holes with drainage channels. During dry weather, watering should be done daily. However, care should be taken to avoid water splashing on the trunk or leaves, as this can cause burns. In this situation, the plant will have to work hard to recover, which can lead to a reduction in yield.

In addition to watering and fertilizing, don't forget the benefits of loosening the soil. This allows the roots to receive oxygen, which is beneficial for the formation of abundant fruit. Thorough weeding and removal of weeds are essential when growing any tomato variety.

Characteristics of fruits

One of the main features for which this variety is prized is its fruit. They have an unusual shape. The tomatoes grow thin and elongated. Some specimens reach 15 cm in length. This makes Supermodel tomatoes ideal for whole-fruit canning. A large number of tomatoes fit in a jar, as they fit tightly together, leaving little headspace.

The fruits are a beautiful pink color. It's very deep and can even reach crimson when fully ripe. Inside, the pink flesh is firm and contains a small number of seeds.

The Supermodel tomato variety rarely weighs more than 150g. The skin is thin but firm enough to prevent cracking when exposed to hot liquids or damage during long-distance transportation.

An additional advantage of these tomatoes, as noted by gardeners, is that they can be safely picked even when still green. The fruits ripen perfectly off the vine.
