Soaking cucumber seeds and other plant seeds in hydrogen peroxide strengthens and hardens the crop before planting. The substance is harmless and does not affect the taste of the fruit.
What seed material is suitable for soaking?
The seeds of any plant grown in soil can be soaked using hydrogen peroxide. However, some require pre-soaking for germination. These include:
- seed material with a hard shell (watermelon, pumpkin, cucumbers and other types of crops);
- which contain essential oils (dill, parsley, carrot, herbs);
- seeds of ornamental plants and flowers.
Soaking is also carried out on seeds that are of questionable quality or have not been used for a long time.
Why is hydrogen peroxide treatment necessary?
The substance acts on the seed like water, yet contains a large number of beneficial components that strengthen and accelerate the germination process. This pharmaceutical product can be used for various purposes on planting material, but is most often used to activate the natural processes that promote sprout formation before sowing.

To select the best cucumber seeds
Using a pharmacy solution, you can identify cucumbers that are unfit for further use. To do this, place the seeds in a deep container and pour hydrogen peroxide until the liquid completely covers the seedlings. Damaged and unusable cucumbers will float to the surface.
For hardening
Using an antiseptic softens the hard skin of cucumbers and promotes rapid germination. Hydrogen peroxide can also be used to harden the plant and prepare it for planting. Place the seeds on a cloth soaked in the antiseptic and refrigerate for 24 hours. This strengthens the plant's immune system, resulting in healthy sprouts that can easily withstand lower temperatures.

For seed disinfection
Using a pharmacy disinfectant eliminates harmful fungi and pathogenic spores that may persist in planting material. It is recommended to soak cucumbers for 15 minutes; this time is sufficient to protect future seedlings from diseases. After soaking, the planting material is placed on a cloth until completely dry.
For fast germination
Once the seeds are disinfected and completely dry, you can begin the germination process. Hydrogen peroxide is also used for this, as it can act as a growth activator. Oxygen particles penetrate the seed coat and activate the plant's growth process. To speed up germination, you can first place the seeds in a cloth bag and soak them in a wood ash solution (10 grams per liter of warm water). The seedlings will absorb the necessary minerals and, after soaking in the peroxide for 12 hours, will begin to actively develop.

The mechanism of action of peroxide on seeds
The antiseptic has the following effect on planting material:
- softens and breaks down the tough skin;
- eliminates substances that block germination, increases the amount of oxygen in the endosperms and activates their further development;
- used as an antiseptic.
The substance can be used both for seeds and for already sprouted cucumbers.
How to prepare the correct solution
Long-term use in its pure form is not recommended. A special solution must be prepared. To do this, mix a full tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide (3%) with half a liter of warm water. Prepare a fresh solution before each use.
Important: Soaking in hydrogen peroxide solution should be done for no more than 24 hours; prolonged use may result in loss of beneficial properties and death of the plant.
Technology of the procedure
To properly soak cucumbers in hydrogen peroxide, you must follow the following procedure:
- prepare a saucer and 2 pieces of gauze;
- wash the saucer thoroughly, fold the gauze into 4 layers;
- a piece of gauze is placed on the bottom of the saucer and generously moistened with a solution of hydrogen peroxide;
- cucumbers are placed in an even layer on gauze;
- a second piece of gauze soaked in the solution is placed on top.

If sprouting several cucumber varieties, use separate containers. After the seeds have been in the solution for 12 hours, rinse them with warm water.
When should treated seeds be planted?
Cucumbers should be planted according to the following scheme:
- If a greenhouse or pots for seedlings are used, planting is carried out every other day;
- It is necessary to sow in open ground after the seeds have swollen and begun to sprout.
Sprouted seeds should not be stored for long periods of time, otherwise the cucumbers will develop improperly. Sprouting cucumbers speeds up seedling development and prevents disease. Hydrogen peroxide oxygenates the seedlings and makes the planting process more comfortable.
