Crop losses due to weed infestation in vegetable crops range from 6 to 22%. In severely infested fields, the loss can reach 70%. BASF's Butisan 400 is a next-generation herbicide. Its targeted application prevents damage to cabbage crops while effectively killing weed seeds and their underground seedlings.
Composition, dosage form and purpose
The herbicide "Butisan 400" is available as a suspension concentrate containing 400 g/l of the active ingredient metazachlor. It is effective against most annual monocotyledonous and grassy weeds in cabbage crops. Basf uses metazachlor in mixtures with other substances. For example, "Butisan Avant" (based on metazachlor, quinmerac, and dimetheenamide-P) and "Butisan Star" (metazachlor and quinmerac) are used against weeds in rapeseed.
Mechanism of action
The herbicide "Butisan 400" penetrates the weed through the roots, geniculate rhizome, cotyledons, or the vaginal leaf (in cereals, the first leaf after the cotyledon). Seed germination stops, and the seedling curls up and dries. Most often, the plant dies before it reaches the soil surface. More resistant weeds may germinate, but weakened seedlings will die within a week at most. If the herbicide is applied to germinated plants, they stop growing, lose their green color, and dry out.
Pros and cons
The herbicide "Butisan 400" has its own distinctive advantages. These include:
- has a detrimental effect on most annual dicotyledonous and cereal weeds, chamomile;
- applied to the soil surface without requiring incorporation.

The downside is potential toxicity and a danger to the environment, especially aquatic organisms. Therefore, safety precautions must be taken very seriously.
Calculation of consumption
The manufacturer recommends applying 1.5-2 liters of Butisan 400 per hectare of field. It is sprayed as an aqueous solution, requiring 200-400 liters per hectare.
Preparing the working mixture and how to use it
To spray the soil with Butisan 400 herbicide, prepare the working solution directly in the sprayer's tank. First, add water to 2/3 of its capacity. Then, turn on the hydraulic mixer and add the required amount of Butisan 400. Mix for 7-10 minutes. Add the remaining water to achieve the calculated concentration and mix again for 5 minutes.
Instructions for use of the working fluid:
- The hydro mixer operates throughout the entire spraying period.
- Wind should not exceed 4 m/s.
- Air temperature – no more than 20 °C.
- Apply "Butisan 400" 1-7 days after planting cabbage seedlings. Watering is essential afterward, otherwise the herbicide won't be able to take effect deep into the soil.

Precautionary measures
To ensure protection from the potential harmful effects of Butisan 400 herbicide, cover all body parts while working with it. Workers should wear:
- special clothing;
- chemical-resistant gloves;
- headdress;
- glasses with side flaps;
- respirator.
While spraying Butisan 400, do not talk, eat, drink, or smoke. If the product gets into your eyes, rinse them with running water for at least 15 minutes. Keep your eyes open.
Clothing should be stored away from food and feed. All used containers should be cleaned with water and detergent.
Butisan herbicide should be stored indoors for no more than 5 years from the date of production. The warehouse must be ventilated. The product is not explosive or fire hazardous, but if exposed to a fire at high temperatures, it will release toxic substances. Store at temperatures no lower than -5°C and no higher than +40°C.

How toxic is it?
The herbicide "Butisan 400" is virtually non-toxic after a single inhalation, skin contact, or oral exposure. Prolonged, repeated exposure may cause skin and eye irritation. Signs of poisoning may occur if inhaled or ingested.
Possible compatibility
The herbicide "Butisan 400" cannot be combined with strong oxidants, concentrated bases and strong acids.
Leave the mixture in a closed container for half an hour. The products are incompatible if foam, flakes, or sediment appear. If the working fluids separate into layers, shake the mixture again. If the solution appears unchanged from the original, it can be sprayed together with continuous stirring.

Similar means
It is always useful to know substitutes for a chemical product in case it is not available at your favorite retail outlet or if you need to change the substance to prevent the pest from becoming accustomed to it.
