Description of the Deliciosus tomato, its characteristics and cultivation features

Many gardeners and summer residents are interested in how to grow the Deliciosus tomato. Before the summer season, gardeners are looking for new tomato varieties to plant in their plots. The requirements for tomatoes are relatively simple: they need to be easy to grow, produce high yields, and have excellent fruit characteristics.

The Delicious tomato, also known as Deliciosus, has earned positive reviews from gardeners. It's a tall tomato variety, surpassing other hybrid varieties in many characteristics. The bushes produce fruit frequently and abundantly, and the tomatoes' characteristics delight their owners. This variety is ideal for canning and commercial cultivation, and can be transported over long distances.

What is the Deliciosus tomato?

Breeders have created a variety that can be planted outdoors or in greenhouses without affecting yield. A description of the variety would be incomplete without discussing the characteristics of the resulting fruits and the Deliciosus tomato itself.

Characteristics and description of the variety:

• the first tomato crop appears on the bushes just 3.5 months after the seeds begin to sprout;
• This is an indeterminate type of plant, the height of which is 1.8-2 m;
• As the bushes grow, they need to be tied to supports and side shoots need to be removed;
• It is best to form a bush with 2-3 stems, although many gardeners grow it with 1 stem (in this case, there is a very high probability that the fruits will weigh more than 1 kg);
• the tomato has a flat shape, resembling a beefsteak in appearance;
• the weight of 1 fruit can vary from 0.4-0.6 kg to 1.5-1.6 kg;
• The leaves on the bushes are medium-sized and a pleasant green color.

The tomatoes have a rich red color and excellent flavor. They contain several seed chambers, but they, like the seeds, contain little water. The flesh inside is dense, sweet, and grainy. The skin is smooth and glossy.

The fruits ripen evenly and do not have so-called green caps or hard inclusions on the surface.

Seeds of this variety can be purchased online or at specialty agricultural stores. Other names may also appear on the packages, such as Delicious Red, Tasty, or Giant.

The fruits are used to make tomato juice, various pickles, salads, tomato puree, soups, and pastas. In the summer, Deliciosus tomatoes are used in salads with other vegetables, added to stews, or added to braised vegetables.

How to grow tomatoes?

Hybrid tomatoes are heat- and light-loving crops. They can be grown in two ways:

• by sowing seeds directly into the ground;
• through seedlings.

Before planting seeds in peat pots, you need to prepare the seed. To do this, rinse the seeds and then treat them with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. This should be done no later than the second half of March.

Next, spread peat moss into the pots, making 1-2 cm deep depressions in the soil. Place the seeds in the peat moss and cover with soil. Cover the pots with plastic film to maintain a proper greenhouse effect. Remove the film only after the first leaves appear. Once this occurs, move the pots to a source of natural light.

Some home gardeners install special electric lamps to heat seedlings. This approach is advisable if the temperature in the room where the seedlings are growing is unstable.

The first leaves on the bushes allow for picking, and then you can begin hardening off the plants by briefly bringing them out onto the balcony. As soon as the weather warms up, the tomato plants can be planted in a greenhouse or outdoors. 2-3 plants should be planted per 1 m² so that the bushes do not interfere with each other as they grow. Manure and wood ash are placed in each hole before planting.

The soil must be watered before transplanting the plants into the ground. Water again after a week. Careful monitoring of the plants is essential throughout the season, removing any infected leaves, fertilizing, spraying, and watering regularly and properly. This ensures a future harvest, which is not difficult to achieve if you take care of your tomatoes.
