Description of the early tomato variety Sam Rost and its characteristics

To fully appreciate the Sam Rast tomato, the characteristics and descriptions provided by producers may be insufficient. However, reviews from gardeners who have grown this variety provide more information about the plant's yield in different climate zones. The Sam Rast variety is suitable for cultivation in greenhouses and open ground throughout Russia.

General description of the plant

This tomato belongs to the group of early-ripening determinate varieties. Sam Rastov's bushes grow to only 30-40 cm. The semi-spreading plant structure requires no shaping or support; it is quite compact and tolerates dense plantings well. Sam Rastov's doesn't require a lot of soil and can be grown in containers on a balcony or windowsill.

A bush with tomatoes

For a compact variety, Sam Rast has an unusually high yield. Each bush yields approximately 2-2.5 kg of marketable produce per fruiting season. The bush bears fruit briefly, finishing the harvest within 2-3 weeks.

Like many modern varieties, Sam Rostov tomatoes are immune to Alternaria and downy mildew, tobacco mosaic, and root rot. Thanks to their early and consistent harvest, they are not susceptible to the spread of late blight. Samrost tomatoes do not suffer from temperature fluctuations or prolonged unfavorable environmental conditions when grown in open ground. Gardeners note the stability of harvest yields in different seasons.

This variety lives up to its name: the amateur gardener needs little effort to produce fresh tomatoes. Primary care involves growing seedlings and watering young plants promptly after planting. Mature and early-bearing tomatoes can tolerate a slight lack of soil moisture and can be watered only once every 5-7 days.

Features of the fruit variety

Sam Rast tomatoes are among the earliest varieties. It takes about 95 days from sowing the seeds to harvesting the first ripe berries. This period may be slightly shorter or longer when grown in a greenhouse or in beds. The bush produces 3-5 fruit clusters, each bearing 4-6 fruits. A berry can weigh 60-100 g. The tomatoes are uniform in size and ripening time, the entire cluster ripens almost simultaneously, and a single harvest can yield 1-2 kg of ripe tomatoes per square meter, even at the beginning of the fruiting season.

Tomato skin is quite thin, and the fruit can crack if exposed to excess moisture during ripening. However, the skin can withstand heat treatment during canning. Tomatoes store well when slightly unripe, are easily transported, and ripen at room temperature. The color of biologically ripe tomatoes is bright red; when technically ripe, the color is light green, without dark spots.

The flesh of a ripe tomato is pleasantly juicy and slightly firm. When fully colored but not yet fully ripe, it is firm. This allows you to select the best tomatoes for fresh consumption or for winter preservation. Inside the tomato are 2-3 large seed chambers filled with juice and seeds.

sliced tomatoes

The taste is rated as average. Compared to sweet and exotic varieties, the early tomato Sam Rost may not seem the most exciting, but it has a classic sweet and sour tomato flavor with a distinctive aroma.

Early tomatoes can be used to make any vegetable salad, or added to sandwiches and hamburgers. Small tomatoes are perfect for serving appetizers or hot dishes individually. Their vibrant flesh can be added to soup dressings, sauces, or vegetable spreads.

Winter preserves can be made from whole or processed tomatoes. Small, calibrated tomatoes look beautiful in vegetable platters or individually jarred. Sliced tomatoes complement appetizers and canned salads. Tomatoes can be used to make tomato juice or ketchup, or to make lecho or other tomato-based appetizers.

Agrotechnical requirements

When growing seedlings, sow the seeds so that the seedlings are approximately 50-60 days old when transplanted to their permanent location. Then, the first harvest can be harvested in just 4-6 weeks. In southern regions, tomatoes are often sown directly into the soil in the selected plot.

Sowing seeds

Tomatoes require light, fertile soil. When digging, add 10 kg of humus, 1 kg of dolomite flour, and 500-600 g of wood ash per 1 m². The seedling substrate is prepared using the same principle, mixing equal parts of humus, garden soil, and fine sand, adding 2 tablespoons of chalk and ash per 10 kg of the mixture.

Before sowing, seeds are soaked for 30-40 minutes in a solution of potassium permanganate or Fitosporin.

After this, they are lightly dried to restore their flowability, and sowing begins:

  1. When sowing directly into the ground, the seeds are spaced 10-15 cm apart in furrows 1-1.5 cm deep. The distance between rows is 35-40 cm. After planting the seeds, water the bed and cover with plastic wrap to retain moisture. After emergence, thin the tomatoes, leaving the strongest seedlings spaced 30 cm apart. At 30-35 days of age, hill the plants, and thereafter water them only on a timely basis.
  2. When sowing from seedlings, sow the seeds in a container with prepared soil, burying them to a depth of 0.5 cm. Before sowing, it's best to thoroughly soak the soil with a hot solution of potassium permanganate, cool it, and scatter the seeds over the wet surface, covering them with dry soil or sand. Cover the container with plastic wrap and germinate the tomatoes at a temperature of 25°C. When 2-3 true leaves appear, transplant the seedlings into individual pots. Plant them in the garden after the danger of frost has passed.

When growing on a balcony, it's easier to use the seedling method. Allow the tomatoes to grow until they're 40-50 days old, then move them to a larger container to ensure they don't become too leggy. Further care consists of regular watering.
